Version 0.6

The main new feature is that long-distance travel requires much less babysitting. When the wind turns foul for your course the ship stays on the nearest tack and continues in accelerated time, and you can press a key to change tack instantly.

Sailing model changes

  • Fore-and-aft sails more easily damaged
  • The automatic sail plans take in sail more quickly as the wind strengthens
  • The rudder is slightly more effective
  • Griping reduced when making sternway
  • "Helm amidships" order

Other features

  • Splashes from waves against the ship - the sea looks wetter
  • Landscape resolution is doubled
  • Slightly more varied landscape colours, including snow
  • More diegetic map
  • Display of days from the last port visited; ship's bell
  • The enemy attacks automatically in the battle scenario
  • Random start date in world scenario

Known issues

  • The sea is glitchy, and sometimes disappears altogether in heavy weather
  • A "trial version" watermark has appeared at the bottom right -- this is a Unity thing, not the game.

I finally got around to trying a 'real time' sail where I leave the game running for multiple days. Unfortunately it seems to get unstable after being alt-tabbed too many times. At least the graphics do, with a lot of flashing of the seascape and jittering UI. Maybe a very simple position-date-heading Save/Load function would mitigate this?

'Going Large' (in the sail presets menu) is not a synonym for running before the wind. It more properly refers to a broad reach where all sail can be set without shadowing. So this sailplan option should be renamed to 'Wind Astern' or the like.

Thanks! I should get the name right; what about "wind right aft"? I imagine "before the wind" is too broad.

I suppose that works.

Also, have you ever considered making the calendar 'wrap around?' I wanted to set out for a real time voyage with the IRL date, but that would have resulted in me sailing off the edge of the weather timeline in a few days.

As a huge fan of the genre, I am delighted to find this game. Unfortuantely, it does not seem to run for me. After unzipping, running the app I get the first Page with the ship drawing and "Harbor", "Battle" and "World". Hovering over these three items makes them larger. But clicking anywhere on the page does nothing. Any idea what I'm doing wrong. Obviously, it's working for others.

Running a brand new PC:
Windows 11
Intel i7 13700k
NVIDIA 4070ti
32G RAM

Many thanks!!!

Since you can interact with the main menu, the engine (such as it is) is running okay. I have seen behaviour like this when I build the game and forget to set up the data directory correctly. It should come correctly out of the zip file, but who knows.

- do you have the correct directory structure - in the root directory "painted.exe" and a subdirectory painted_Data; this contains a subdirectory Data with some stuff about ships and weather in it?

- when you click on one of the menu items and nothing happens, does the game hang, or can you still interact with the menu?

- what is in "output_log.txt" in painted_Data?

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Yes, the directory structure is as you say. But on a hunch I re-extracted to a different directory, which did not require administrator permission, and now it runs. Thanks so much for this software, and the great support.

Thankyou!  I realise I am late to the party,  but thank you for this.  I have a long way to go before I can pull off any Aubery manoeuvres, but just leaving harbour was one of the most satisfying experiences.   Again.  Many thanks.  😊

Thanks Neil for v.0.6 .  Very unexpected and appreciated. l I look forward to trying it out.
